Where may a family and its name be said to originate? Assuming there was just one origin for KELLAWAY and its variants, what was it?
There is general agreement with Reaney (A Dictionary of English Surnames, p.58) that the name derives from the village of Caillouet in Normandy. The name probably refers to a pebbly place (Fr: caillou, a pebble). A knight from Caillouet may have settled in Wiltshire, probably at Kelways, near Chippenham. The oldest record is of Philip de Chailewai in 1165. The name seems to have spread from there into Dorset, Devon, Somerset, Cornwall, and to a lesser extent into Wiltshire.
The spelling has varied widely. With most people illiterate it must have depended upon scribes to decide on spellings for individual pronunciations. Of the list above of mediaeval variants, just a few survive in more literate times. Still there are at least three spellings for Stephen the leather-parer of Yeovil (1732): Kellaway, Callaway and Calway. Perhaps it also depends on the whims of whoever transcribes the records.
The three most common spellings today are Kelway, Callaway and Kellaway, with the medial "a" varying with "o" and "e".
