Mystery: Her parents went insolvent and her father fled to Sydney. Her mother's fate remains a mystery. In 1845, Jessy was placed in the Queen's Orphan School in Hobart (misnamed Spinks); in 1845 she joined her sisters in Mrs Stevens' school before the three girls were sent to London. They wwere again misnamed Spinks.
